Henry

I allowed myself to kiss him. Because I’ve had a breakthrough. I’m closer now than ever. The cure is within my reach. Soon I’ll be a man worthy of Liam. So I kiss him as a promise. To him. To myself. Soon this nightmare will be over. Soon. I’ll set us both free.

Poole attempted to wake me this morning, only to find me sickly and pale. After deciding to let me sleep, he shook me awake this afternoon at Utterson’s behest. I’ve never slept in quite so late, well past two. I’m ashamed to admit I needed it. I slept like the dead.

After violently juddering me, terrified I’d died in my sleep, Poole was finally able to revive me. He’d found me partially naked in bed, covered in blood, and unresponsive. And between the two of us, there was no deciphering where the blood came from—what had happened, where I’d gone. There are no obvious wounds or cuts anywhere on my body. The blood wasn’t mine.

As I began to panic, Poole calmed me. “It’s all right, young master. We’ll handle whatever happened. Try not to worry.”

He was still perturbed and distressed by his inability to wake me. I feel the same way, but for a different reason.

All my dark desires have vanished. I feel them no more. When I think of Liam, I’m able to do so without longing to hurt him. I can picture kissing him, stroking him to completion, and only that. Only his pleasure. I no more long for his pain.

I’ve done it. I’ve been cured somehow. The potion is the cure. And all I need to do is take it and keep taking it. And we’ll be free to be together however we want to be.

Now I head into town with Utterson to attend to the murder case of Lord Carew, and I feel no remorse or regret. The selfish bastard likely got himself piss drunk and mugged or started a fight in a bar after his rage at being turned out by me last night.

However it happened, now he’s dead. A part of me rejoices. His death is yet another obstacle removed from our path. Nothing can stop us now.

Utterson and I ride together in his coach, and despite the dire circumstances, Utterson chatters away with a smile on his face. He tells me about his conversation with Liam, and a twinge of jealousy shoots through me.

“Have you known him long?” he asks.

I don’t know what to say, so I shrug. “Long enough.”

“But he’s new to this line of work, obviously. He was so nervous. It’s endearing.”

“He’ll be fine.” I don’t want to talk about him. I don’t like the sated smile on Utterson’s lips when he talks of Liam, nor the playful, teasing look in his eyes.

“It’s good of you to take him in, give him that experience. He’ll benefit from it greatly, no doubt.”

He pauses, and a moment of silence passes between us. The carriage jostles us as we hit a pothole in the road.
